In the AFC, last year's AFC champ — the Denver Broncos — will be joined by:
The Indianapolis Colts
The Pittsburgh Steelers
The Kansas City Chiefs
The Tennessee Titans
New England Patriots
The Miami Dolphins
The Houston Texans
New York Jets
The Oakland Raiders
In the NFC, last year's NFC champ — the Seattle Seahawks — will be joined by:
The San Francisco 49ers
The Green Bay Packers
The Atlanta Falcons
The Minnesota Vikings
The Detroit Lions
The Chicago Bears
The New York Giants
The Philadelphia Eagles
The Washington Redskins
The Dallas Cowboys
The Arizona Cardinals
The Carolina Panthers
The New Orleans Saints
While the Seahawks and Broncos are both considered offensive juggernauts, it is the NFC's powerful defensive-minded teams that have a chance to emerge as conference champions. Only five teams in the conference are ranked in the top 10 of both total defense and points scored.
Here's an in-depth look at the playoff contenders and their strengths and weaknesses.
Atlanta Falcons
Advantage: The Falcons have a dominating defense that led the league in total yards and points allowed. Defensive end Vic Beasley leads a ferocious pass rush that's led by All-Pro linebacker Deion Jones.
Disadvantage: The Falcons' offense is ranked 23rd in the league in points scored and 31st in total yards. They're not known for their running game, either.
Detroit Lions
Advantage: The Lions' defense is the main reason they had the most sacks in the NFL this season. They also have the league's best pass rusher in defensive end Ziggy Ansah.
Disadvantage: Matt Stafford has started 24 consecutive games, but the Lions have only one 1,000-yard receiver in Calvin Johnson, who retired after this season. The running game has been non-existent the last two seasons.
